Breaking: UEFA Announces Major Champions League Format Changes for 2027
UEFA has confirmed significant changes to the Champions League format starting from the 2027-28 season, including a revamped group stage.
UEFA has announced further changes to the Champions League format, set to take effect from the 2027-28 season. The new format will see the competition expand to 40 teams, with a revised league phase replacing the traditional group stage.
Under the new system, each team will play 10 matches in the league phase against 10 different opponents, determined by a seeding system based on historical performance and club coefficients.
The top 12 teams will advance directly to the Round of 16, while teams finishing 13th to 24th will enter a playoff round for the remaining four spots. The changes are designed to increase competitive balance and generate additional revenue for participating clubs.
European football's governing body has stated that the changes will ensure more meaningful matches throughout the competition and reduce the number of dead rubbers in the early stages.
